- copy of General Liability insurance with Renewable Energy Long Island named as Certificate Holder and the statement "Insured has coverage to do work for solar installations" under the Description of Operations/Locations/Vehicles/Exclusions added by Endorsement /Special Provisions ("Insured has coverage to do work fo wind installations" for wind installers).
- proof of successful completion of training course for Solar PV, Wind or Solar Thermal (details below)
- documentation of the age of your business (i.e. NY Dept of State Division of Corporations)
- copy of Home Improvement License for Suffolk County
- copy of Home Improvement License for Nassau County
- copy of Master Electrician License for Suffolk County (for Solar PV and/or Wind)
- copy of Master Plumber License for Suffolk County (for Solar Thermal)
- copy(ies) of Master Electrician License for Towns of Nassau County (for Solar PV and/or Wind)
- copy(ies) of Master Plumber License for Towns of Nassau County (for Solar Thermal)
- If the ME or MP for Suffolk or the Nassau Towns is not the owner of the company, documentation supporting the relationship between the ME and the company
- Contact information (names, email, phone) for customer references (see below for technology specific requirements), which are your most recent installations and none of which are related to owners or employees of the company
- Ashley will review materials within 2-3 weeks and process the application. Please add Ashley[at]RenewableEnergyLongIsland[dot]org to your email contact list so that emails are not marked as spam. Ashley will contact you with any questions or requests for additional materials.
We will not recommend specific contractors or installers or equipment. We provide consumer guidelines for selecting a contractor and provide contractors with sales leads. There is no cost for a basic listing on the Renewable Energy Long Island Web site.
Any appropriately licensed contractor can be listed on our site. However the business must meet the following additional criteria to be listed as a Pre-Screened Solar Contractor on RELI’s site:
- Your renewable business has been in operation at least 3 years, or you have equivalent professional experience – for example, if you operated as a ‘sole proprietorship’ for more than 3 years, but registered your company with the IRS and/or state less than 3 years ago.

Exceptions:

Contractors or Electricians whose business has been in operation for 3 years or more but the business was not a renewable energy installation business may be listed as a RELI Pre-Screened Contractor when:
-
their renewable energy installation business is 1 year old AND they meet all of the other qualification criteria AND are NABCEP certified.

their renewable energy installation business is 2 years old AND they meet all of the other qualification criteria.
- Good professional and customer references: Your firm must provide a minimum of three (3) customer references, and those references must result in a minimum of an AVERAGE (‘OK’) overall rating (2 is considered average on a rating scale from 1 to 4). At least 2 of the customer referrals must be from your most recent work completed, prior to being listed on RELI’s site. The 3 references cannot be relatives of the company owner(s).
- No unfavorable legal decisions against your company: The firm has not lost any significant legal actions or liens filed against the owner of the business by customers or other home improvement professionals, including subcontractors and materials suppliers, in the past five years.
- Clear record with your creditors.
- Have not filed bankruptcy in the past 7 years.
- Have General Liability insurance with Renewable Energy Long Island as named Certificate Holder and the statement "Insured has coverage to do work for solar installations" under the Description of Operations/Locations/Vehicles/Exclusions added by Endorsement /Special Provisions.
The order of the listings will be first by NABCEP certification and then by the number of LIPA grid-connected systems installed. Installation claims are verified by entry into RELI’s Solar Registry at: http://www.SunshineIsFree.org/solarregistry/
- Installers must provide proof of successful completion of a 40-hour Photovoltaic Residential Installation Workshop from SUNY Farmingdale, Bronxville Community College or comparable certificate from a solar manufacturing firm, including hands-on installation of solar panels, or equivalent certification or experience.
- Installers must maintain their solar photovoltaic installation skills by participating in at least one solar generation system installation or attending at least one in-depth solar installation training course every 24 months. Installers who fail to meet this requirement will have their eligibility status changed to “Pending”.
- Installers must have 3 reference supported LIPA installations
- The contractor must be properly licensed to perform solar contracting in the jurisdiction (County, City, Township or Village levels) in which they are installing. All such licenses must be in good standing with the relevant issuers and not be suspended or revoked.
- Contractors that wish to operate in Suffolk County must carry in their company's name a current Home Improvement Contractor's License AND/OR a current Suffolk County Electrical License in the company owner’s name.
- Contractors that wish to operate in Nassau County must carry a Home Improvement License in each jurisdiction in which they are operating, AND must submit the electrical license from their designated electrical sub-contractor in each jurisdiction in which they are operating.
- RELI requires a copy of the ME license from any of the Nassau Co. Towns AND
- RELI requires both parties to agree to notify RELI of any changes or termination of their relationship within 15 days of such changes or termination.
The order of the listings will be by the number of LIPA grid-connected wind energy systems installed. Installation claims are verified by RELI. While there is currently no NABCEP certification available for wind energy systems, we plan to order the listings first by NABCEP small wind certification (when it becomes available) and then by number of LIPA installations.
- Installers must provide proof of successful completion of a 40-hour Small Wind Installation Workshop from an independent training institution, or a comparable certificate from a wind turbine manufacturing firm, including hands-on installation of backyard wind turbines, or equivalent certification or experience.
- Installers must maintain their backyard wind installation skills by participating in at least one backyard wind energy system installation or attending at least one in-depth wind installation training course every 24 months. Installers who fail to meet this requirement will have their eligibility status changed to “Pending”.
- Installers must have 1 reference supported LIPA installation
- The contractor must be properly licensed to perform solar contracting in the jurisdiction (County, City, Township or Village levels) in which they are installing. All such licenses must be in good standing with the relevant issuers and not be suspended or revoked.
- Contractors that wish to operate in Suffolk County must carry in their company's name a current Home Improvement Contractor's License AND/OR a current Suffolk County Electrical License in the company owner’s name.
- Contractors that wish to operate in Nassau County must carry a Home Improvement License in each jurisdiction in which they are operating, AND must submit the electrical license from their designated electrical sub-contractor in each jurisdiction in which they are operating.
- RELI requires a copy of the ME license from any of the Nassau Co. Towns AND
- RELI requires both parties to agree to notify RELI of any changes or termination of their relationship within 15 days of such changes or termination.
The order of the listings will be first by NABCEP certification and then by the number of systems installed. Installation claims are verified by RELI.
- Installers must provide proof of successful completion of a 24-hour Solar Thermal Installation Workshop conducted according to NABCEP or LISEIA standards including 2 days of classroom instruction and 1 day of hands-on installation of a solar thermal system. Course should include a component for trouble shooting.
- Installers must maintain their solar thermal installation skills by participating in at least one system installation or attending at least one in-depth solar thermal installation training course every 24 months. Installers who fail to meet this requirement will have their eligibility status changed to “Pending”.
- Installers must have 3 reference supported installations
- The contractor must be properly licensed to perform wind contracting in the jurisdiction (County, City, Township or Village levels) in which they are installing. All such licenses must be in good standing with the relevant issuers and not be suspended or revoked.
- Contractors that wish to operate in Suffolk County must carry in their company's name a current Suffolk County Master Plumbers License or a Home Improvement license and a legal relationship with a Master Plumber licensed in Suffolk County as a partner or officer in that corporation.
- Plumbers doing business in Babylon, Islip and Huntington must be fully licensed in those townships and must sit for that Town’s Master Plumber exam. In Islip Township, if not a Master Plumber in Islip, a restricted solar thermal plumber’s license is required.
- Contractors that wish to operate in Nassau County must carry a Home Improvement License in each jurisdiction in which they are operating, AND must submit the Master Plumbers License from their designated plumbing sub-contractor in each jurisdiction in which they are operating.
- RELI requires a copy of the MP license from any of the Nassau Co. Towns AND
- RELI requires a signed statement from the Solar Installation Company and the designated plumbing sub-contractor that the Solar Installation Company is permitted to use the MP license AND
- RELI requires both parties to agree to notify RELI of any changes or termination of their relationship within 15 days of such changes or termination.
The following issues, conditions or violations may result in removal from RELI’s Solar Contractors Listing. These include, but are not exclusive to:
- Failure to act professionally, fairly and in good faith with the customer, RELI, LIPA or any representatives of the aforementioned.
- Failing to adequately inform customers of all program milestones, schedule and requirements.
- Being unresponsive to RELI or LIPA representatives
- Being unresponsive to customer’s installation and service needs.
- Providing false or misleading information verbally or in writing to RELI, LIPA, or RELI or LIPA’s representatives or to customers.
- Providing false or misleading information on LIPA’s program or the installer’s role in the program.
- Installing systems that do not meet or violate LIPA program requirements, the National Electric Code or other codes, equipment manufacturer’s installation requirements or generally accepted good installation practices.
- Failing to adequately and promptly address system problems as identified by LIPA, RELI or the customer or failure to adequately perform inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Repetitive errors in system design or performance calculations
- Substantiated written complaints received by RELI from customer that are significant or repetitive
- Failing to complete installations within a reasonable time period, considering the circumstances of each installation.
- Having eligibility revoked in RELI’s wind installer listing
- Charging customers rates that are not fair and equitable, competitive and consistent.
- RELI may remove the contractor from the listing if their insurance certificate lapses. RELI will reinstate the installer’s eligibility once an updated insurance certificate in the listed company’s name with RELI as named insured has been filed.

Please note that contractors with NABCEP certification will be listed first on the website according to the number of grid connected systems installed. Contractors without NABCEP certification will be listed by number of grid connected systems installed.
